Camping With Tornadoes

Camping With Tornadoes
By Benedict Smythe

Tornadoes are normal occurrences. More than a hundred tornadoes
visit the various counties of the United States on a yearly
basis. In addition to that, tornadoes often pay a frequent visit
to the Great and High Plains regions of the country. As such, if
you are planning to have a camping trip out in the mountains in
early or late spring, you ought to be prepared to handle
tornadoes that might come your way especially because of the
fact that almost seventy percent of all the camping sites in the
country are quite vulnerable to tornadoes.

a. When you are on the highway and you are just about to head
for camp or go home, you can probably drive away from an
approaching tornado that’s still miles away from you. However,
before you start driving away, make sure that you are well aware
of the direction of the tornado’s movement. If the tornado is
moving towards the east, you should drive south. If the tornado
is moving north, drive towards the east. Bear in mind that you
should always drive to the right of its direction as it is most
likely to go straight. However, keep in mind that tornadoes
change directions frequently and you cannot exactly tell where
it is headed so you have to be ready at all times.

b. Most tornadoes move at more than sixty miles per hour. At
this rate, your vehicle can probably outrun it provided that the
road that you are on allows you to drive at such speed. If you
think that your vehicle is not capable of running at that speed
or if there are many roadblocks on your way, you might as well
abandon your car and run towards the best shelter that you can
see. Never stay inside your vehicle assuming that it can protect
you from the approaching tornado. Take note of the fact that
aside from the wind that can easily smash your car by picking it
up and tumbling it down, your vehicle can be hit by flying
debris.

c. Do not try to outrun the tornadoes on foot. This is not
possible. Find a safe shelter quickly. Do not go under
overpasses. They are not in the list of adequate tornado
shelters, the best shelters would be those that can protect you
from flying debris and those that are firmly rooted in the
ground. Among these shelters are ditches and caves. Most flimsy
buildings, cabins, and houses are not capable of protecting you.
If you want to protect yourself, you should get low and stay out
of the wind.

d. When you are already inside the best shelter that you can
find, make sure that you cover your head with something hard in
order to protect it from flying debris. If there are no hard
objects that you can use, you can use your hands. Also, make it
a point to hang onto something that is firmly rooted in the
ground. It will be best if you can tie yourself on a firmly
rooted object in order to prevent yourself from being airborne.
Do not bother to open the windows of your shelter.

Camping Rules on Public Camp Grounds

Camping Rules on Public Camp Grounds
By Benedict Smythe

Camping can be a very pleasant experience. However, you have to
bear in mind that you are quite responsible for promoting and
maintaining that “pleasantness” throughout your camping
activity. You have to plan and you have to be orderly if you
want to have a satisfying camp experience. You should also be
ready for unexpected events that might ruin your plans. In
addition to that, you should have an extreme concern and
consideration for other campground guests.

Aside from making sure that you abide by the rules and
regulations set by the campground owners and staff, you have to
make sure that you pay respect to each and every guest with whom
you share the camp grounds. Below are some basic camping rules
that you ought to know before setting out to camp in a public
camping ground.

a. Never litter. Make it a point to bring your own trash bag
and be sure that you will make use of it. Do not litter within
your camping site nor should you throw your garbage anywhere on
the campground. Be responsible for your own garbage and dispose
of it properly. You wouldn’t want anybody throwing thrash on
your camping site, would you?

b. Never burn toxic materials while camping. Be contented with
the wood on your camp fire and make sure that you keep plastics
and styro foam away from the flame. Note that the odor might not
only annoy the other campground guests. It also introduces many
harmful smoke particles in the air. Such particles are dangerous
to your health as well.

c. When using the public restrooms, pick up after yourself and
your companions. When you use the sink or the bowl, make sure
that you wipe the splashed soap and water.

d. If you are accompanied by children, make sure that you teach
your children proper camp site behavior. Teach them to throw
their trash properly. Tell them that they cannot run around
portions of the camping grounds that are occupied. When they
play, make sure that they keep their noise down.

e. When you to play some music, you should make sure that you
keep it within your own camp site. You will never know if some
of your neighbors hate the kind of music that you love to hear.
To make sure that the volume of your music is just right, try
walking away from your campsite. If you can still here your
music even as you have reached one of the other camper’s site,
then you should turn down your volume.

f. Late night conversations and games are very popular during
camping activities. However, you should bear in mind that some
campers may not be as fond as fire side storytelling as you and
your companions are. As such, if you intend to have late night
chats, make sure that you won’t be able to disturb your
neighbors. Do not forget to extinguish your camp fire according
to the specified rules of the camp ground management.

g. If you are camping with your dog make sure that you can pick
after him. Keep a trash bag close to you every time you decide
to give your dog long walks.

Camping Offers - Affordable and Eco-Friendly Holiday Options

Camping Offers - Affordable and Eco-Friendly Holiday Options
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Sandy_Cosser]Sandy Cosser

Economic woes needn't spoil the holiday season with long faces moping at home. Camping still offers affordable holiday options for holiday makers, and caters to a number of holiday needs. Small children love the fun and excitement associated with outdoor adventures and older children may appreciate getting back to nature, but anticipate some argument when they realise that there may not be any cell phone reception. Fathers love the whole macho aspect of camping, while mothers can appreciate getting away from the drudgery of household chores and urban life.

With the evolution of tents and camping/outdoor equipment, camping needn't be the entirely rugged experience that it used to be. Those who like their modcons and comfort can relax in large cabin tents, portable showers, and luxury camping chairs and even advanced cooler bags and ice packs that keep produce fresher for longer. Die-hard campers can still revel in the satisfaction of building fires from scratch and keeping their beers cool in nearby streams.

Home Handyman magazine published a list of tips for campers to ensure that their camping holiday remains an enjoyable experience and doesn't turn into a damp, insect-ridden nightmare. Your choice of tent it very important; small two-man tents are ok for short trips, and perhaps father and son bonding experiences. But cabin tents are preferred for longer trips, and probably any trip that involves women. Always check the tent in the store before you buy it; you need to be sure that all the zips work, there are no tears in the fabric and that it is capable of withstanding any crisis or problem that may arise. And practice pitching the tent before you leave for your holiday. You don't want the first time you pitch it to be in twilight or possible rain when you arrive, and everyone is tetchy from the drive anyway.

Choose your spot carefully. You want to set up camp on a spot that is reasonably level so that if it does rain, you don't end up in the middle of a small lake. Try to be near a tree because in the great outdoors shade is golden. You also need a decent spot to build your fire. When building a fire, don't take short cuts with petrol or other dangerous flammable materials. Be patient, and always make sure that the fire is extinguished properly before you leave camp for the day.

Do not forget to pack a first aid kit, sunscreen and insect repellents. Citronelle candles are great for warding off mosquitoes and flies and for adding to the camping atmosphere. Matches are very important, otherwise it doesn't matter what you use to build a fire you'll never get it going. A torch or two and extra batteries are equally important, as are a hammer, extra tent pegs, an umbrella and a small fire extinguisher.

Follow the basic rules that you would at home. Don't leave things lying around, don't leave fires unattended, don't leave sharp dangerous objects within reach of children and, something that you probably wouldn't do at home, check for snakes. Check your shoes and sleeping bags and watch where you walk. Don't kill them just because they're there, you're in their home remember.

The most important thing about camping is to be prepared for anything; that means any weather, any accidents and injuries and any health scares. With a little bit of planning and foresight, camping can be everything that you want it to be.
